Places To Visit In Kottayam

 

Kottathavalam


Kottathavalam is a beautiful cave carved on a rocky surface. The cave is considered as the resting place of the Madurai royal family. The cave is decorated with various sculptures of gods and goddesses and weapons of ancient times.

Nadukani


Nadukani in Kottayam district is such a beautiful place situated amidst nature's desert and dense forested hills. Situated on a hilltop at an elevation of 3000 ft above sea level, this place offers a breathtaking view of the mountains in the north and the Muvatupuzha River.

Poonjar Palace


Poonjar Palace, located in the Meenachil Taluk, is a huge palace surrounded by borders. The palace is decorated with a variety of furniture and antiques, including grand chandeliers, jewelery boxes, statues, grain gauge, weapons and palm carvings.Tourists will also see a beautiful sculpture of Nataraja and a palanquin had used by old rulers.

The next attraction in the palace is a thoni for Ayurvedic massages, crafted out of a single piece of wood.

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary


The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary or Vembanad Bird Sanctuary is located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake in the Kavanar river valley. Spread over an area of 14 acres, it provides natural habitat for 91 native bird species and 50 species of migratory birds.

Considered one of the largest bird sanctuaries in India, one can find local and foreign species from June to August. Migratory birds visit the area from November to February.

Thirunakkara Mahadev Temple


Thirunakkara Mahadev Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva, is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site, a rich summary of the Kerala style architecture. The temple was built in the 16th century by the Thekkur King.

It also adorns many beautiful murals that showcase Hindu themes. The 10-day festival celebrates the cultural performance of various art forms, including Kathakali, Velakkali and Mayilatam (peakcock dance), presented by professionals. The fair attracts devotees and tourists to the temple.

Boat Race- Aranmula


July, August and September marks the beginning of the Onam Festival. During this time you will witness a boat race involving over 50 traditional boats of various sizes.

Legend has it that a devout Brahmin pledged to provide all the requirements of Thiruvona Sadya for the traditional ritual dinner on the Thiruvonam day at Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Once, a boat named Thiruvona Thoni was attacked by enemy soldiers. People from neighboring areas sent their snake boats to protect the Thiruvona boat. Later, this exercise evolved into a snake boat race for Lord Parthasarathy, conducted on the Uthrattati day, and eventually became popular due to the Aranmula boat race.

Pathiramanal Island


Pathiramanal Island is located in the Alappuzha district of Kerala.The island got its name from the word 'Pathiramanal' which means 'sands of night'. Located in the middle of Vembanad Lake, the island is home to birds such as the Pintail Duck, Common Teal, Darter, and Indian Shag.
